Students served up Christmas dinner to care home residents and members of the Balderton branch of the Royal British Legion.

People living in five care homes in Newark and Balderton, including The Oaks and Lancaster Grange, attended the lunch at the Newark Academy.

The event was organised and staffed by pupils in year 11, who are members of the student council, while teachers and other staff cooked 58 Christmas dinners.

Their guests played bingo and were treated to a singing performance by sisters Sophie, 11, and Emily Hibberd, 14, of the school choir.

Amy Birch, 16, said: “We started planning this back in October and we have all contributed to what’s here today. It’s good to see it all come together at the end.”

Hope Bannatyne, 15, helped to serve teas, coffees, and bring out plates of food.

“It is nice to do something different,” she said.

School leader for teaching and learning Mrs Katie Vause said: “I am proud of all the students and immensely grateful to the staff who pulled together and prepared the food.

“Everyone seemed to have a good time.”
