Newark Half-Marathon is set to make a triumphant return this weekend for the first time in two years.

This Sunday (August 17), thousands of runners and supporters will be hitting the streets as the half-marathon sets off.

The race will start at 9am, on Hawton Road, Newark, and will pass through the villages of Hawton, East Stoke, Elston and Thorpe, before finishing up at Sconce and Devon Park.

A number of temporary road closures will be in force to facilitate the half-marathon from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

These road closures encompass a loop through the villages, following Hawton Road out of Newark, Farndon Lane, Fosse Road, Lodge Lane, Mill Road, Top Road and Brecks Lane in Elston, Cross Lane, Moor Lane, Main Street through Thorpe, and Thorpe Lane, with parking restrictions of Pinfold Lane in Elston and Valley Prospect in Newark.

This year’s event will also be the first organised by specialist race organisers RunThrough, after responsiblity was handed over from the trustee at the end of last year.

RunThrough co-founder Matt Wood previously told the Advertiser that they would bring their vast experience of organising over 300 events a year “to deliver an outstanding race day for the town”.

The route of the race dates back to 1982, and around 1,500 runners are expected to take part this year.

RunThrough have also partnered with DB Wood for the event and will be support Care After Combat.

Organisers have also issued advice and useful tips for dealing with warm weather as high temperatures have been forecast on the day.

Runners are advised to start slower than they normally would, due to potential exhaustion.

It is also suggested to use sun screen, drink plenty of water before, during, and after the run.

Anyone who feels light headed, dizzy or start to cramp should stop running, walk, and find the nearest marshal or alert another runner to tell a marshal, and try to stay in shade.
