Time to focus on the fallen

Church services and parades will be held throughout the area on Remembrance Sunday.

Newark’s parade will meet at the London Road carpark from 10am and leave at 10.40am.

It will march along Cartergate and Appletongate to the war memorial outside Newark Parish Church. Wreaths will be laid just after 11am, followed by a service in the church.

A parade through the Market Place will follow, with music provided by Newark Town Band.

In Balderton a parade will muster on Mount Road, near William Ghent House, at 10.15am, and march to St Giles’ Church at 10.25am.

After a service the parade will reform and march to the village war memorial at Balderton Methodist Church, where there will be a further service during which wreaths will be laid.

The clergy, choir and congregation from Southwell Minster will be joining Royal British Legion members at the war memorial on the Burgage, Southwell, from 10.40am on Sunday.

A short service at the memorial will include two minutes’ silence at 11am and wreath-laying by representatives from the legion and Southwell Town Council, and other uniformed groups.

The parade will move to Southwell Minster for the main service and afterwards to the memorial at the War Memorial Recreation Ground gates where the legion will lay a wreath.

In Bingham a service will take place at the parish church at 10.45am when standards from uniformed groups and the Royal British Legion will be presented.

The service will include a two-minute silence at 11am.

In Farnsfield, a parade will leave the village cricket club at 10.15am and march via Station Lane, The Ridgeway and Main Street to St Michael’s Church, where a service will begin at 10.45am.

After the service and wreath-laying at the war memorial the parade will march past, with the salute being taken by Mrs Jean Williams, a former member of the WAAF and WRAF, before being dismissed on The Ridgeway.

There is a service at Collingham Methodist Church at 10.45am after which a parade will make its way to the war memorial in the grounds of All Saints’ Church where wreaths will be laid.

Mrs Jackie Norcott, a member of the Collingham and district branch of the Royal British Legion, will lay a wreath in the colours of the Merchant Navy to recognise those who won the Arctic Star medal.

She plans to wear the medal that was awarded to her father.

In Radcliffe a parade will muster outside the Black Lion pub, Main Road, at 10.45am before making its way to the cenotaph for a two-minute silence.

The service will be attended by one of Nottinghamshire’s deputy lieutenants, Mr Michael Rowen, Radcliffe county councillor Mrs Kay Cutts, borough councillor Mr Neil Clarke and representatives from the parish council.

The first wreaths will be laid by the president of the Radcliffe Royal British Legion, Mr Syd Pritchett, and president of the ladies section Mavis Guttridge.

A service at St Mary’s Church will follow.
