Bin and fence damaged as Southwell struck by anti-social behaviour overnight

An incident of anti-social behaviour has seen a memorial tree’s protective fencing damaged.

Southwell experienced some cases of anti-social behaviour last night (August 27), which saw a litter bin damaged and removed from it’s post, and parts of protective fencing broken.

The fencing was around an oak tree planted as a memorial to Queen Elizabeth II in War Memorial Recreation Ground.

Southwell Town Council have alerted the police to the damage to their property, and asked for CCTV around the town to be checked in a bid to identify the offenders.

The council also believes it to be linked a group of three males and a female seen walking around the town in an ‘intimidating’ manner on the same night, with the males said to be wearing dark clothing, hoods and masks.

Chief Inspector Clive Collings, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We've received a report of criminal damage and are investigating what happened. This kind of behaviour is utterly unacceptable and will not be tolerated in Southwell.

“As we work to catch up with the people responsible, we'd like to hear from any witnesses who have yet to come forward."

Anyone with further information should contact the force on 101.
