Travellers have set up an encampment in a public park.

Around 13 caravans arrived at Sconce and Devon Park, entering through the Farndon Road entrance by the Spring House at around lunchtime today.

They are believed to be the same group who quit Lincoln Road Playing Fields after being served with an immediate eviction notice following a peaceful protest by local residents.

A spokesman for Newark and Sherwood District Council, which owns the park, said: "Council officers will be attending the site with police this afternoon to serve notice on those camped illegally at Sconce and Devon Park to leave immediately.

"If they do not comply, the police will consider using their powers, under Section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, to remove them from the land.

"The council is also examining the legal options available to us to ensure that they are prevented from trespassing onto council-owned land in the future."
