Travellers residing on the carpark of district council's Newark Sports and Fitness Centre served with eviction notice

Travellers remain pitched on the carpark of a council's leisure centre.

The encampment of at least 10 caravans, camper vans and associated towing vehicles have been at the Newark Sports and Fitness Centre for several days.

The site owners are Newark and Sherwood District Council.

Council leader David Lloyd said: “The district council immediately responded to reports, undertook the necessary checks and initiated legal proceedings.

"Using powers under trespass law, we have been able to serve notice on the Travellers requiring them to leave.

"The notice requiring them to leave was served early yesterday (Monday) and bailiffs have attended site today to enforce the removal.”
