Footpath to close temporarily at Southwell Minster after tree damaged in Storm Lillian

Work is to take place to make a damaged tree in a cathedral’s grounds safe.

A Horse Chestnut in the grounds of Southwell Minster, near The Refectory cafe, was damaged during Storm Lillian in August.

The tree suffered a major fracture down the base of a limb reaching across the footpath between Church Street and War Memorial Recreation Ground.

In order to make it safe for visitors and businesses in the area, tree works are needed and are scheduled to take place from Thursday, September 5, to Saturday, September 7.

To take the weight off the fracture the canopy of the tree will be reduced by 30% and the remaining canopy thinned by 20%.

Any dead, diseased or crossing branches will be removed and bracing will be put in the tree to secure the fractured limb.

Cordon tape and signage will be in place for safety reasons.
