79th anniversary of the second world war bombing of the Ransome and Marles bearings factory to take place at Newark Cemetery
An annual commemoration will take place to mark the 79th anniversary of the second world war bombing of the Ransome and Marles bearings factory in Newark, which claimed 41 lives.
The commemoration will be in Newark Cemetery, where 30 of the victims are buried, a week on Saturday.
The Mayor of Newark, Irene Brown will be among those attending along with a bugler, Roger Bryan of Newark Town Band who will herald two minutes of silence.
It will be centred around the Sacrifice Memorial Cross down the Main Drive, commencing at 1.30pm.
Newark town councillor Laurence Goff (pictured) who is also a member of the Friends of Newark Cemetery, said: “It’s poignant we hold this memorial to the workers at R&M who made a large contribution to the war effort.
“This was the town’s largest loss of life. It was their sacrifice to work around the clock day and night in a dangerous place. We owe them a big debt of gratitude.”
An exhibition of photographs and articles about the bombing and commemorations will be at Newark Library during opening times until the end of March.
There will also be a display in the cemetery chapel after the service.
