Visibility concern at very busy Newark junction

More telecommunications boxes have been added to the corner of a busy junction, which, it is said, limit visibility for motorists.

Last month, a large phone mast was put up on the junction of Grange Road and Hawton Road, Newark, with several associated storage boxes.

Residents complained that the mast and boxes limited the vision of drivers joining the busy main road from Grange Road.

Now, two more boxes have been added, limiting the view even further.

“It’s an absolute waste of money,” said Lynne Jones, a resident of Hawton Road.

“They have moved the boxes back slightly because there was so many complaints. However, it wasn’t worth the workmen doing it.”

According to Lynne, drivers still have to pull out into the main road in order to see oncoming traffic.

“People tend to forget that you have a bonnet on your car and you can’t go right up to the white line,” she said.

“You still can’t see and you have to stick your bonnet out into the road. You have to come over the line, even now that they have moved it. It’s dangerous as hell.”

Lynne claims that only two properties received planning notice for the mast and its associated boxes, which came several weeks after they were erected.

She said: “This could’ve gone anywhere but you can’t put big boxes on the corner of a busy road. It’s like someone putting a hedge up.

“We know that these things have to go somewhere, but there is no need for them to go up on a busy junction.

“There’s hundreds of residents that this affects. This is not just about an eyesore, it’s about a danger.”

Mark Carter, another Hawton Road resident, said he thought the storage boxes were moved to save money, instead of tearing the mast down altogether.

“People have been holding back and trying to look through the boxes which isn’t good,” said Mark.

“I’m not sure where we’re going with it. I don’t see a point in moving the boxes because it’s still going to be dangerous. Is saving a few thousand quid worth somebody’s life?”

A Newark and Sherwood District Council spokesman said: “The applicant has been advised to not undertake further works unless and until planning permission is granted.

“The applicant is aware that any works that are undertaken without the relevant grant of planning permission may be subject to enforcement action and remedial works may be required.”
