Customers in a Newark town centre café were waited on by men in Lycra on Saturday.

The Bean And Vine in the Market Place was not testing new uniforms for its staff, but was helping out with a fundraising drive.

Mr Richard Hughes and Mr Stephen Adshead are raising money for the Vodafone Foundation by competing in a nine-day Ride Across Britain event from Land’s End to John O’Groats, starting on Saturday.

Mr Hughes, whose mother, Denise, is a chef at the Bean And Vine, said they had raised around £800 each towards their individual targets of £1,000.

“While not wanting to be intrusive, we are raising awareness of the charity and accepting any loose change the customers might have,” he said.

Mr Adshead said: “The ride is getting very close now. We’re getting nervous but excited.”

They have also held a poker night to raise funds.

Newark Cycles have helped get their bikes in shape.

The foundation aims to rehome people around the world left homeless by natural events or war.
