Free parking in Newark questioned after Foston woman is handed fine after one hour stay in London Road carpark
A woman who went shopping in Newark thought how nice it was that two hours of free parking was on offer — only to get a fine.
Karen Esson, of Foston, parked in the London Road carpark. She noticed it was two hours free and went to the market.
When she returned under an hour later she found a penalty notice of £50 attached to her windscreen and approached the traffic warden.
“I hadn’t seen you needed to still get a ticket to cover you for the two hours free parking,” she said.
“I asked the traffic warden if he’d given many out and he said ‘quite a few.’”
District council leader David Lloyd, said: “The requirement to still get a ticket from the machine, displaying a two hour duration has been clearly communicated via additional signage and regular social media posts - without a ticket, we cannot tell if people have been there for more than the allotted time.
“We understand some regular carpark users were not aware and as a result, we are in the process of reviewing the signage in each carpark, ensuring it is appropriately positioned and clearly visible.”
