A police cordon remains at the scene of a suspected gas explosion in Wright Street, Newark.

Work is underway today to remove roof slates and bricks from the houses affected while forensic investigations take place.

Building Control Services from Newark and Sherwood District Council will be carrying out the controlled demolition of the supporting walls and the remainder of the roof structure on the two neighbouring properties.

Residents in odd numbered properties in Wright Street have now returned to their homes.

Residents of Private Street and the even numbered properties in Wright Street are being asked to prepare and plan for another night away.

The demolition and forensic activity may continue to cause disruption to utility supplies to these properties.

Officer in charge, Superintendent Mike Manley said: “I’d like to thank the people affected for their understanding and patience, along with those who are volunteering and helping to make life as comfortable as possible for those who cannot return to their homes.

“We are undertaking some very careful and detailed work at the site and will keep members of the public updated as often as possible.”

A man and a woman died in the explosion which happened shortly before 5.15pm on Sunday May 19 at one of the houses in Wright Street.

Superintendent Manley said the man who died has now been formally identified as Leslie Rourke, 70. The woman who died, who has yet to be formally identified, is believed to be his daughter-in-law, Jeanette, 40.

Two children and a woman from the next door property were taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment for smoke inhalation and have since been discharged.

Jeanette's husband Nick sustained serious injuries and smoke inhalation and remains in hospital.

Residents from affected properties should report to the Information Centre at Charles Street Methodist Church or contact the helpline on 0300 500 80 80. National Grid will need to access the properties today to restore supply and carry out testing.
