Schools and families across Newark have got into the spirit of World Book Day today.
Youngsters have got involved in everything from dressing up as all kinds of story-book characters to reading and speaking to authors.
The annual day is a celebration of books and reading for pleasure, which aims to ensure every child has a book of their own.
Mount Church of England Primary School was visited by author Rachel Parkes, who read stories with the pupils, while pupils at Sir Donald Bailey Academy read bedtime stories.
Barnby Road Academy held a variety of World Book Day activities and Chuter Ede’s sites got stuck into reading and quizzes.
Families also got involved, and author Emma Oldham’s daughter went to school as the hero of her book "The Whale Who Disappeared".
Seven-year-old Coddington Church of England Primary School pupil Arrietty went as herself, donned in blue and with a toy whale in tow, as her literary counterpart Arry is the young environmentalist in the story.
“Seeing Arrietty enter the playground so full of confidence and pride in representing herself was so heartwarming. Not many children get that opportunity. It feels great to give her that opportunity,” said Emma Oldham.
“I was so excited when I realised I could be Arry - me - from The Whale Who Disappeared,” added Arrietty.
