Newark and Sherwood United achieve dominant 5-0 win over West Bridgford

It was a bridge too far for an ambitious host club as they hosted a team from the step above them in a pre-season friendly – only to be beaten 5-0.

West Bridgford welcomed Newark and Sherwood United to Gresham Sports Park and The Highwaymen wasted no time in their quest to rob as many goals from the opposition as possible.

Luke White scored a highly proficient goal from some way out to open the scoring for the visitors before new signing Mark Dudley netted his first for the club three minutes later.

Seven minutes in, The Highwaymen were up 2-0 and the game was looking as though The Highwaymen would ride off into the sunset.

The hosts tightened the screws and managed to last another 25 minutes before United scored again.

This time it was another new signing, Tom Jones who found the net.

Jones looked the goods as he contributed a high work rate and added a constant goal threat to the Newark arsenal.

Fans of the side can look forward to cries of, "It's not unusual," echoing throughout the grounds every time he scores this upcoming season.

Spectators from the sidelines were impressed by the new signing and several positive comments about his play were heard.

One of several trialists netted to again see the Highwaymen pull ahead further to make it 4-0 in the dying stages of the first-half.

It was a much more tame affair for United in the second-half with a trialist netting the one goal to take the total up to five but by then, the damage had already been done.

A good sized contingent made the journey down the road from Newark to watch their team in action and they were happy with the result.

Jonathan D'Laryea's team will now travel to Clipstone on Saturday for their next pre-season friendly.

The match will kick-off at 3pm.
