Balderton battered in top of table clash
The eagerly anticipated top four clash in South Notts League Division A turned out to be a one-sided affair with second-placed Radcliffe crushing fourth-placed Balderton by nine wickets.
Balderton won the toss and elected to bat, but they regretted the move as Chris Holden (five for 19) tore through the top order. Only Alan Jackson (32) made any impact as the visitors were bowled out for 99.
The home side appeared to be in a hurry to finish the job with Rob Sutton (54) and Mark Noblet (41*) knocking off the runs in just 14 overs.
Southwell, after starting the campaign with three straight wins, stumbled on Saturday at Gedling Colliery.
The hosts put on 246 for five in a leather chase on a hot day, with only spinner Matt Wookey (three for 60) sticking to his task. Chris Miller (55) gave the chase his best shot but, when he was dismissed by a fine one- handed catch from Steve Burton the visitors dropped anchor and closed on 174 for seven.
West Bridgfordians are the new leaders in Division C after a surprising setback for Collingham at home to Bramcote.
The visitors only managed 60 the previous week, but they bounced back with 236 for four. Collingham gave it a go in reply but the prize wicket of David Pipes was snaffled for just 20 and, despite a knock of 60 from former Notts player Paul Todd, the Dale Field side finished on 184 for eight and had to settle for a six-point losing draw.
Bottesford climbed to second place in Division C after successfully defending 103 at home to Hickling, with Dave Warburton (five for 23) and Jake Hutchinson (three for 14) turning the game around.
Newark were the latest to suffer at the hands of Reece Hayes of Gedling Colliery 2nds, with the Kelham Road side hoping for a quick change in fortunes.
The 13-year-old began his senior career in the fourth team last year and has progressed rapidly, adding an unbeaten 59 to his 34 the previous week as his side, assisted by Geoff Moore (87*) coasted to victory by nine wickets at the section’s bottom club.
Thurgarton edged a close one at home to Risley with 15-year-old James Taylor (46*) staying calm to score the winning runs in the final over, after earlier taking four wickets in the match at home to Risley.
Oxton are improving after a poor start in Division F, and Mark Groome bludgeoned an unbeaten 67 at home to Bottesford 2nds, including 24 off the final over in a total of 155 for eight.
That feat was the deciding factor as Bottesford 2nds replied with 144 for seven, despite a knock of 60 from Neil Coddington, to fall 11 runs shy of the target.
It’s not often that you score 125 and still end up on the losing side. But that’s what happened to Stuart Hubbard of Risley 2nds in Division K.
His team ended on 219 for two but that was a poor second to Caythorpe 4ths who had amassed 300 for four, with Shaun King (114) and Matthew Staszkiewck (88) the main contributors.
Fiskerton 2nds aren’t too far behind the leaders in Division M after 12-year-old Jake Fish (63) scored his maiden senior half-century in their thrashing of Lambley 2nds.
