Flowserve march to the top of the table

Joint manager Craig Roche insisted Flowserve would not get carried away by their good start as his side hit the goal trail on their way to the top of the Notts Senior League Premier Division.

Two home victories in four days took the rebuilt side — led by Roche and fellow joint manager Stephen Kirkham — to the summit with a 100% record from five matches.

On Saturday they defeated Attenborough 8-0 before coming from behind for the second successive Tuesday to defeat Bingham Town 4-2.

Roche said: “It has been a good start and we couldn’t have asked for much more.

“But it is early days and it is a long season. We are ambitious, but the main aim is top-six, which would be a good progression after finishing 11th last season.

“If we get any higher that is a bonus.”

Four days after their thrilling last-gasp comeback 4-3 win at local rivals Southwell City, Flowserve raced into a five-goal half-time lead against Attenborough.

Elliot King led the way with five goals and Jack Beckett, Darryl Price and Soloman Miller, with a fine strike, completed the rout.

Firepower

Roche said Flowserve had carried on from where they left off at Southwell.

“To score eight and keep a clean sheet was a big plus,” he said.

“We had a couple of changes on Saturday, but we played well and could have had a lot more goals.

“We have split the teams into two secttions as we set up.

“We have a defensive six — a back-four and two centre midfielders — two talented wingers and two good strikers.

“Our theory is that if we can keep clean sheets or not concede many, we will win most games because of the firepower we have got going forward.”

Reflecting on the four-goal fightback at Southwell, Roche added it was disappointing to be 3-0 down but encouraging to see the spirited reaction in the second-half when Flowserve hit back to win 4-3.

On Tuesday Flowserve conceded a first-half lead against Bingham as Callum Leach scored before King struck to level after a defensive mistake.

In the second period Sam Agar struck a hat-trick for the new leaders.

Cavan Robb hit a late consolation.
