Racing driver Jack Harvey has been reunited with a former team for a return to the IndyCar Series in the US.

Harvey, 24, who made his debut in the series at the iconic Indianapolis 500 in May, will compete in the final two races of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar season with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM).

The Bassingham driver will get behind the wheel of the No.7 SPM Honda at Watkins Glen International, New York, this weekend and complete the season at Sonoma Raceway, California, in mid-September.

Harvey twice finished runner-up in Indy Lights — a feeder competition for Indycar races — while racing for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, gaining six wins and 18 podium finishes in the top level of the Mazda Road to Indy development ladder.

“It’s obviously a really exciting time for me and I’m pleased to rejoin everyone here at SPM,” Harvey said. “We had a lot of success together in Indy Lights and I’m excited to be back with so many familiar faces.”

Harvey’s dream first drive at the Indianapolis 500 endurance race — in the Andretti Autosport 50 Honda, supported by Michael Shank Racing — ended in heartbreak when he spun off the track after hitting debris on the 66th lap.

'The Indy 500 was an incredible experience'

“I’m delighted to have the chance to race in the Verzion IndyCar series again this year.

“The Indy 500 was an incredible experience, but it was disappointing to have our race end early due to something that was out of our control,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on track at Watkins Glen.

“Although I haven’t driven there, it is definitely a bucket-list track and one that I have been looking forward to driving on even before I came to America.

“I’m also looking forward to continuing the journey with (sponsors) AutoNation and Sirus XM — I wouldn’t be racing this season without them.

“I can’t thank them enough for their continued support and I hope to be able bring home two solid results.”

SPM general manager Piers Phillips said: “We are pleased to welcome Jack back.

“He has done a great job for the team throughout his Indy Lights career, and we have been looking at ways of incorporating him into our IndyCar programme.”
