Last-gasp Buckthorp wins place in cup quarter-final for Collingham
Collingham secured a place in the Central Midlands League Cup quarter-final thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Jackson Buckthorp.
With extra-time looming, Buckthorp’s cleanly-hit strike flew past the helpless keeper to seal the win and send Collingham through.
Renishaw were an improved side to the one that was beaten 18-0 at Collingham in August.
Since that North Division league game, Renishaw have had a complete overhaul of players and were the division’s form team — receiving the Central Midlands team-of-the-month award for October.
The visitors’ revival meant a repeat of the huge home win was unlikley in the third-round cup-tie.
In an entertaining game, it was clear from the start that the teams were evenly-matched and that the tie would be tight throughout.
The first chance went to the home side when a 25-yard strike from Jack Durkin was well saved by the Renishaw keeper, who palmed the ball away.
Buckthorp was unable to force the rebound into the net from a tight angle.
Collingham did take the lead, however, on 36 minutes when a good run from right-back Sam Goodwin took him into the penalty area.
He pulled the ball back to George Asplin, who finished low past the keeper to score his 15th goal of the season.
The lead lasted for just four minutes as Renishaw centre-half Adam Powell rose highest at a corner to head powerfully into the back of the net to level.
The second-half continued in a similar vein to the first with both teams creating chances as they pressed for a winner.
But from the last action of the tie Buckthorp struck the dramatic winner.
The cup-tie was the first of three home games in six days in different competitions for Collingham.
Last night they were due to host Phoenix in the league before a second derby of the season against Newark Town — their tenants at Station Road — tomorrow night.
The Central Midlands League Floodlit Cup second-round match will kick-off at 7.45pm.
