‘The first major title on the road up there!’ Newark boxer Tom Cowling preparing for title fight he hopes can propel his career
Tom Cowling has a title in his sights.
The Newark boxer will face Troy Coleman for the vacant Midlands middleweight belt at Grantham’s Meres Leisure Centre on Saturday, September 14.
Also featuring on the The Time Has Come bill will be former WBO Global, Commonwealth and British light heavyweight champ Callum Johnson, who once knocked down Artur Beterbiev during their IBF World title bout in Chicago, and Newark’s Jade Grierson.
A host of Lincolnshire and midlands-area fighters will also feature on the exciting card.
Promoter and trainer Carl Greaves believes victory could propel Newark-based Cowling into a new stage of his career.
“It’s a great venue and we’ve got a fantastic top of the bill,” he said.
“Tom Cowling against Troy Coleman is a proper 50-50 fight. Both have similar records.
“Tom’s unbeaten and Troy’s been in there at a good level, won a couple of titles.
“It’s a big test for Tom and if he wants to win he has to be at his very best because he’s not an easy fight. But it’s something he;s ready for, in my opinion.
“Hopefully the people of Grantham and Newark get behind him for this one and cheer him on.”
After a year out of the sport, Cowling returned to the ring with a points victory over Tomasz Feltz in Newark, following this up by stopping james Todd at his last fight night at the Meres.
“He had a low-key comeback fight, but his last fight in Grantham, he looked fantastic,” Greaves added.
“That’s put him in good stead. He’s got good power, punches well and he’s got massive potential. It’s a good chance to see him fight.
“Winning the Midlands title would mean a big step up. It’s the first major title on the road up there.
“If you win that you target the English title, win that you go for British and Commonwealth.
“The Midlands is a huge area when you consider it starts at Cleethorpes and finishes in Worcester, there’s a lot of good boxers in that area so it’s a good title to have.
“Some great fighters have won the Midlands title. hopefully it can come back to Newark.”
Johnson is no stranger to fight fans since securing gold at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010.
The Bostonian, now fighting at cruiserweight, backpeddled on his decision to hang up his gloves and is looking for more ticks in the win column after securing a points success over Viktar Chvarlou in his last fight in Grantham.
“Last time was a bit of a rush job, he wasn’t fully prepared and didn’t box to his full capabilities, Greaves confessed.
“But he’s prepared better for this one.
“He’s 39 now but we’re hoping for one big last fight, one big last chance and hopefully he can get that one big major title before he retires.
“He’s got massive pedigree and its great to have him on locally.”
Johnson’s opponent is yet to be confirmed, but a number of Greaves’ fighters have fights matched.
Grantham-born and Newark-based super welter Grierson, Boston’s Harvey Elding and Thomas Pogson, Shaydon Walmsley (Grimsby) and Jamie Behan (Lincoln) will also showcase their skills.
