Southwell City Zebras defeat Leicester St Andrew’s Bar 3-0 on the United Counties League Division One groundhopping tour

The Zebras rocketed in the new season with a dominant victory at home in front of a bumper crowd.

Southwell City won 3-0 against visitors Leicester St Andrews to the delight of 477 spectators.

Numbers were boosted by the United Counties League's ground-hopping tour which also visited Newark Town on the same day.

Jonny Upton's men came out of the gate firing as Cal Law struck an early goal to welcome the travelling side to the Centenary Sports Ground.

Brad Peace-Macdonald hit the club's second not long before half-time to put the Zebras up 2-0 at the break.

The second-half saw some missed opportunities from the home team, with the opposing keeper keeping some good challenges out.

A penalty was awarded to The Zebras in the 60th minute and skipper Chris Bowles successfully fooled the goalie who went in the opposite direction.

The penalty made it 3-0 and that was the score when the final whistle blew in what was an entertaining game.

"It was a great day," said Southwell manager Jonny Upton.

"It was what I would call a typical first-day performance.

"I was disappointed with how we played for large parts which probably shows everyone how far we've come.

"However, if you'd have offered me 3-0 at the start, I'd have taken it, but I know for a large part of the game we were in second gear.

"The highlight was the crowd and the volunteers.

"We got some amazing feedback from all of the groundhoppers and the effort that went into the day was fully worth it."

Southwell City will next travel to West Bridgford for a Tuesday night fixture on August 8, kick-off 7.45pm.
