Jazz et Vin! returns to Newark in May with a programme of live jazz over the weekend of May 17 and 18. It will be held for the seventh year running at Ann et Vin on Castlegate.

The event — a mix of ticketed and free-to-enter gigs — is organised by Peter Duncan and Paul Sparks and offers something to suit a wide variety of tastes.

Paul said: “The busy line-up is another heady blend of well-loved faces back by popular demand.

“This time they will play alongside a new name for Newark, but one well-known to jazz lovers and musicians alike.”

Saxophonist Dave O’Higgins is a regular at Ronnie Scott’s Club in London.

He will be joined by the Nottingham-based Neil Hunter Trio, featuring Ian Beeston and John Porter, to play at the Saturday afternoon’s relaxed free open access session on the wine shop’s famous garage stage.

Dave has recorded with jazz greats from Jamie Cullum and Ray Charles to Martin Taylor and Jim Mullen.

Dave tours regularly with the finest of the current crop of young jazz players, including pianist James Pearson, bassist Geoff Gascoyne, drummer Sebastiaan de Krom and American tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander.

On Saturday evening, the charismatic TJ Johnson will again captivate the audience with his soulful, bluesy vocals and effortless piano-playing.

Paul said: “The Sunday promises further delights. Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis reclaims the afternoon slot for his trio to mesmerise and delight with their blend of guitar-based Hot Club swing and Grappelli-style jazz, and a lot more besides.

“This is ahead of a welcome reprise from last year’s Jazz et Vin! revelation, Nicola Farnon.

“This effervescent and glamorous vocalist and bassist will dance and swing through a set of great standards and originals with her accomplished trio to bring the weekend to a rousing finale on Sunday evening.”

Over the years the jazz weekend has attracted top musicians from all over the UK and further afield, including pianist David Newton, pianist and singer Jeff Barnhart, and reedsman John Hallam,

Tickets are available from Ann et Vin at 23-25 Castlegate.
