Charles Dickens's classic festive tale, A Christmas Carol, is told in Southwell Minster on Wednesday. The story has been adapted for stage by Chapterhouse Theatre Company, which performed Wind In The Willows at the venue in the summer.

On Christmas Eve, the most magical night of the year, the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is whisked away on a terrifying journey through the past and into the future, accompanied by three fearsome ghosts determined to make him realise the true meaning of Christmas.

The classic tale has been specially adapted for the stage by Laura Turner.

She said: “A Christmas Carol is special to a lot of people in the way it captures the true heart of Christmas: the spirit of forgiveness, generosity and love.

“I hope this adaptation reflects everything that the story has come to mean to me and so many others.”

Charles Dickens’s classic ghost story is brought alive in this most traditional of productions, complete with beautiful period costume, song, dance and a magnificent musical score.

Chapterhouse first toured A Christmas Carol over back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011.

In 2016, the show was revived and reimagined, and performed to sell-out audiences across the UK, including three exclusive performances at The British Museum.

It returns this year for a fresh new season of ghostly Dickensian entertainment at historic venues and stately homes throughout the Christmas season.

“Christmas is the most magical time of the year, so I am thrilled that we get to join our audiences in celebrating the season and, hopefully, people will go away with a warm, wintery glow,” said Richard Main, the company’s artistic director.

Tickets for the performance, which starts at 7.30pm, cost £15 for adults and £10 for children and students.
