Station seeks firefighters
Applications are still being sought from people wanting to become a retained firefighter at Southwell.
An open day was held at the station on Saturday for people interested in becoming involved.
Crew manager Tim Spriddell said it had been quieter than other similar events but there had been interest from three people who were possible candidates.
During the day the firefighters showed how a casualty is cut from a car and visitors had the opportunity to go into a smoke-filled room. There was also a ladder climbing exercise and fitness tests.
Mr Spriddell said they were still keen to hear from anybody interested in joining their team.
Working as a retained firefighter means being on call and ready to respond to emergencies within five minutes of a retained fire station, whether from home or from their work.
They need to commit to a certain number of hours each week and be able to attend weekly training and some weekend course.
Mr Spriddell said it was quite a commitment because you have to be ready to respond when your pager goes off.
“But it is so rewarding to help to protect your community and feel like you are giving something back,” he said.
Drill nights are held at the station on Thursdays from 6.30pm.
