Hundreds of people attended an event to showcase what is on offer for the elderly.

Active4Today, U3A, Barnbygate Strollers, Newark Indoor Bowls Club and the Newark Crusader were among 36 groups support and social groups highlighting their work at The Salvation Army Church Centre, Balderton, last Friday.

The Senior Citizens’ Fair was organised by Newark MP Mr Robert Jenrick, who said: “There were hundreds of people from the Balderton and Newark area who came to have a look.

“I wanted to show that Newark is a great community to live in retirement and there are opportunities if you want to stay active.”

A bake sale raised money for Salvation Army Newark.

One of those who attended, Miss Sue Evans, 70, of Beacon Hill Road, Newark, said: “I have been in Newark for 14 years and don’t know anyone except my immediate neighbours.

“It has only hit me recently just how lonely I have been and something like this is brilliant.

“There are so many things I would not mind giving a go.”

Mrs Vivian Jackson, 70, said: “There are a few groups here I didn’t know about before.
“We have been looking at perhaps doing some volunteering.”
