Hercules Clay commemoration: Musket volleys for civil war’s mayor
A service to remember the role of Newark’s mayor during the civil war and his legacy took place on Sunday at the parish church.
As part of the Hercules Clay commemoration, members of Colonel Robert Overton’s Regiment of the English Civil War Society marched from the castle to the town hall to escort Mayor Lisa Geary, the chairman of Newark Business Club, Kevin Guthrie, and other dignitaries, to the parish church for the service, which recognises Clay’s beneficial actions towards townsfolk at the time of the civil war siege.
The traditional elements of the Hercules Clay service, presenting a replica of the Clay Bible and the blessing of the bread for which a legacy was left, were included and the mission statement of the business club was presented.
