New safer crossing points welcomed for Fernwood

Fernwood county councillor Johno Lee has welcomed the addition of new safer crossing points at the roundabout by the Tawny Owl.

Mr Lee said their need was one of the first things his attention was drawn to when elected over a year ago.

The roundabout crossing points were completed last week and make it safer for pupils to reach The Suthers School on Fernwood Business Park as well as those crossing the busy junction for the pub, the gym or other businesses from Fernwood itself.

Mr Lee said: "When I was first elected as a county councillor just over a year ago for Balderton Division, one of the first pieces of work that was brought to my attention was a crossing point for the Tawny Owl pub.

"I’ve worked with the local parish council and officers at the county council and I was able to sign this off a few months after being elected and during summer holidays these works have been brought forward and completed.

"Over the next 18 months I will be carrying out an extensive piece of works adding to what we’ve already been done.

"I have had to put up '30 mile for a reason' signs around Balderton Division to reduce speed that has seen a drop in reported incidences of speeding since the days before they went up.

"We’ve introduced temporary speeding signs in areas where we’ve had an increase in non-compliance of speeding.

"We have also assessed roads across Balderton Division using speeding tubes.

"But we’re not going to stop there.

"As we have a growing community in Balderton Division, including development at Fernwood and Middlebeck, I will be making sure that any changes in traffic flow and speeding are assessed and, where needed, we will look at bringing forward safety elements just as we have done outside the Tawny Owl pub."
