Newark Castle and Gardens and Sconce and Devon Park receive Green Flag status
Four parks and open spaces looked after by Newark and Sherwood District Council have been recognised as some of the best once again.
Sconce and Devon Park in Newark, and Newark Castle and Gardens, which are managed by the district council, are among 1,970 UK parts to receive Green Flag status.
Newark Castle and Gardens has gained the award every year since 2001. To celebrate, the castle will be lit green at night until Monday.
Sconce and Devon Park is home to the Queen’s Sconce, a nationally-important 17th Century Civil War fortification.
A team of park friends work to keep the park looking its best.
Sherwood Heath in Ollerton and Vicar Water Country Park in Clipstone have also received Green Flag status.
The Green Flag award follows plans by the council to plant up to 10,000 trees and aim to reduce its carbon emissions to net zero by 2035.
Newark Cemetery, managed by the Town Council, has also been recognised with a flag.
The international award recognises the space has the highest environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
It also recognises the work of staff and volunteers in maintaining spaces that meet the needs of the community.
The chairman of the district council’s leisure and environment committee, Roger Jackson, said: “We understand how important it is for our residents and visitors to be able to access quality green spaces and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining our parks to a high standard.”
