Manager Martin Allen revealed that captain Neal Bishop put pen to paper to extend his contract at a packed Meadow LAne 1862 Suite at last night's player of the year awards.

Allen said: "People need to recognise that he is not been fit for 4-5 weeks and he has not always trained.

"But he has continued to lead the team and he has been absolutely superb in our shirt.

"I met him last night at a hotel, sat down with him for two hours, had a nice chat. I told him I wanted him to be part of it.

"He agreed to signed a new contract. This afternoon he shook hands with the board for a new two-year contract.

"It is good news for the football club."

This positive news for Magpies fans comes only days after their team secured a point to secure their League One status against already-crowned champions Brighton & Hove Albion.

A first-half stunner from the Seagulls 20-goal hitman Ashley Barnes gave Brighton an early lead but a Gordon Greer own goal levelled things up before the break.

Stalwart Bishop also won a trio of awards at the dinner including first team players' player of the year, Goal of the season, for his strike against Manchester City, and the Supporters player of the year, voted for by the fans.

Others winners were...

Manager's Player of the Year - The supporters.

Golden Boot - Lee Hughes.

Youth Team Manager's player of the year - Haydn Hollis.

Youth Team Players' player of the year - Lewis Whiteley.

Youth Team Golden Boot - Lewis Williamson.
